I called the Ufone customer service center to ask for MMS settings and the representative started telling me the settings. He told me something wrong and i corrected him to which he replied 'Sir have you previously worked at Ufone, or do you think you know more than me' I was flabbergasted and replied 'No i was only trying to correct you' he replied with 'sir i can block your number if you misbehave with me' i hung up on him telling him how rudely he was talking to me, the next thing i know, i can't make calls or receive them. and My SMS had stopped working too. I was astonished. How can Ufone give authority to their customer service representative to do something like that, my SIM had truly been blocked! I couldn't even contact the customer service center again! Angrily, i called Ufone up from my landline and told the new representative my story, he found it hard to believe but still promised to forward my complain to the concerned authorities. I request the PTA to look into the matter and see how cellular companies like Ufone can strip a customer of the services they provide without any prior notice and how representatives can misuse their authority.

Paktel drops another Bomb!! Pretty competitive and intelligent rates I would say! For just another person who wants a decent yet simple mobile connection, I would say Warid is not a bad choice but neither is Telenor and we should keep in mind here that Telenor has fulfilled its promise and kept the rates and Tariff guide easy to understand with absolutely no hidden costs whatsoever and many have been disappointed from what Warid has brought to the market.Warid on the other hand has somewhat twisted rates to make customers.

There are some obvious perks of a Warid Prepaid ZEM connection like no Charges for Voice mail and a pretty much flat rate for other operators and the obvious massive attraction of a very cheap rate for International calls to the U.S.A and Europe. Call waiting, conferencing etc is obviously there but I’m having to mention this since Ufone prepaid customers like me don’t even get those as a part of our package plan! The SIM cost is reasonable I would say because with Ufone giving a free connection with every Rs.250 card nowadays, people will still prefer Warid. And then there’s an obvious stupid factor that because Warid is owned by a Sheikh from Dubai, people here think that the investments will be great and the service will be good, let me remind us all here that it is a business for him and he will carry it on as a business, Warid is not here to do us brotherly favors but to provide us for what we pay to it!

Telenors FREE MMS and SMS promotional offer will end on the 31st of May and it is now being rumored that they will bring their rates down now with the launch of Warid, this doesn’t seem surprising but one company that I’m really expecting to offer some sort of attraction for people is Ufone, its actually been quite a while now since they’ve offered something special and in the case of Mobilink, I don’t think anyone should hope anything from them. They are in a world of their own which I’m afraid won’t last much longer if they don’t show a response. Well the introduction of GPRS was surely a good step and an achievement but it wasn’t enough. Paktel has done everything they could and should have done to sell connections but unfortunately, they’ve brought balance transfer, incoming call pays but that’s about it, they haven’t really spent on their network with the investment of only $70million. Their voice quality is as bad as Mobilinks service and they’ve decided they won’t do anything about it! The greatest spectacle of the day for me was perhaps not Warid’s launch but the quarter page congratulations message that Telenor has sent to Warid, it really marks their decency and standard. A similar response should have been the way Ufone and Moblilink should have greeted Warid telecom. A first in Pakistan, Warid has introduced 30-second charging rather then the conventional 1 minute cost of call, if you talk for 30-seconds or less, you pay that amount only. Not the whole minute! It was very pleasing to hear that, why pay for the extra time when you’ve only talked for a few seconds? But what was truly disappointing from Warid was its advertising campaign. Its okay if you have banners flying all over the city and it’s the talk of the town but when you give something in print, a UAN number perhaps, it should not be busy and you should have the capacity to handle the mass number of calls you will get! I read the paper at 7 AM and called their helpline up and asked for the complete guidance of tariff and what I get to hear is: “Sir we can’t disclose this as yet, please call us after 9” I’m leaving the readers to guess what happened next! But that’s not it! Look at Warid’s website and see for yourself! Even Paktel and Mobilinks website is better! The website is TOTAL BULLSHIT! It doesn’t work properly in Firefox, Is badly managed, contains very limited information, is mostly filled with ‘Sheikh blah blah owns the company and we own Bank Al Falah’ and some other stuff. Earlier in the day it contained the Tariff and everyone could see but at the time of writing this thing, I think they are shy that we couldn’t give people what they expected! I.E Calls to Dubai local, free weekend, Free Warid to Warid, Free SMS. Speaking of what people expected, lets talk about the rumors that had clouded the skies before Warids arrival. Well no, lets not talk about them since none of them came out to be true! But, what are really nice about Warid are their postpaid packages, good pricing which is really quite attractive, if I was to get a Warid connection, I would buy a postpaid one.Telenor offers unlimited Validity of their connections and easlyload which is a major perk for customers provided that is EASILY available! Warid on the other hand has card denominations of Rs100, 250, 500 and 1000 with each of them having the same validity period of one year from the date of recharge. So loading a Jazz card worth Rs300 and keeping it for 45 days is a total waste. With the Pakistan budget expected on the 6th of June, further reduction in taxes for connections and withholding taxes is expected as the PTA suggests. Data In my point of view now has a great potential and rightly so because the future of mobile telecommunication will be based on mobility, faster and better quality information exchange and easy access to the internet anywhere and everywhere.Further analysis will be available as the titans battle it out, we will be there to pick up those pieces!

Mobilink Indigo Customers FINALLY get GPRS, but is it too late?

Yes, its amazingly true! Its time mobilink grew up and thought about services rather than expansion to 300 cities or so! I never thought mobilink would do this, i though it would stay the unconvential network that it truly was before i read that it brought GPRS.. but then again, don' get excited becasue most of the readers should probably read the heading carefully, only INDIGO customers!

We already know that mobilinks Postpaid service Indigo's network is pretty much better then the Jazz brand and offering GPRS on Indigo would be mangaeable whereas, Jazz having more then 2 million customers, mobilink would crash in the blink of an Eye.. So what about the charges?

Well to me they are pretty fair, and i wouldn't mind paying them if i had a mobilink postpaid, but knowing mobilink i would have first tested the GPRS on someone elses device to be assured its good quality speed. Rs500 a month for unlimited GPRS and MMS! now that is pretty good, i mean if you really want to get the most out of it, hook your phone up to your laptop and use GPRS On that too, and you won't have to pay the bills for dialup or whatever! Stay connected to MSN all day long, and do anything you would normally do if you had an unlimited internet connection on your PC! GPRS is almost the same speed as Dialup and being a Ufone customer, i myself have found that sometimes it can be much faster.

well congratulations Mobilink on their achivement and no i wouldn't call it very late, since they know Warid will be offering GPRS as well, maybe they were waiting for it. Its an overall achivement for the telecom sector, another one will be on the 23rd, so be sure to check back for the full coverage of the launching of Warid telecom!

A friend on another forum shared this with us & I think people on here will benefit from it to.

Bluetooth Enhancer. Download it here

Basically it allows more than one BT connection to the phone, so far I have managed to have my GPS unit and headset working at the same time and also receive a file while staying connected to my Bluetooth Jabra BT-200

I have written some instructions on how I paired both units as so far I am yet to find any other information on the app.

What I have done is this :-

1. Do not have the phone BT settings set to authorised on the connections, leave it so you have to say yes or no.

2. Turn on your GPS unit for instance then open up the BT Extender from your menu and choose Discover Devices. It should come up with a list of BT devices, I only have one on at present to thats all that comes up, in this case TomTom Wireless GPS.

3. Now Click back which appears to exit BT Extender. Then start your GPS Navigation or BlueSky etc. and within that app connect to your GPS unit.

4. Open BT Extender once more & choose Options Start Slave, it will show waiting for connection.
Now turn on your (in my case) BT Headset. The phone will ask if you want to accept the connection, choose yes.

If all goes well your Headset will beep and you'll be running two bluetooth connections at the same time.

It isn't a dead simple process as there is no staright option to connect to this unit and this unit, you have to do it in a certain sequence for it to work. But it can be done with time and patience, I am still getting in wrong now. I wrote some instructions and had to go back and re-write them again

This little application shows to us that the ability is there, it just isn't implemented in the firmware.
Come on Nokia, wake up!!!!

Agile Messenger 3.51

The most popular series 60 client has been updated from 3.30 to 3.51! here's a brief overview

Unlike Telenor, Warid decided to give a Supplement in the Leading newspapers and not give full-page Ads.

The advertisment supplement has highlighted some of the features that Warid will be offering. There is still no sign of tariff though.

Warid will be offering a 64k SIM which is enough for storing 500 numbers and 50 SMS messages.

Conference calling/call diverting/call waiting are standard features. Thankfully it has GPRS with MMS but lacks my expectations of giving EDGE or EGPRS (enhanced Data rates for global evoltion)

Groups can be made as Warid Friends and this will offer prefrential rates. This feature in postpaid is known as 'Warid round table closed User group'

Just like the Indian operator Airtel, Warid also lets the user set their tune for all callers trying to reach their subscriber. Make them listen to any song you want!

And Finally 'Warid 2 Much' which is for postpaid subscribers will double the subscribers Minutes and Free SMS every six Months.

SIM will be available to the public on the 22nd of May.

WARID telecom set to Arrive on the 12th of May

Souce of Information: An official Warid Beta-tester

Yahoo! goes mobile on Nokia smartphones
A wide selection of Yahoo! Internet Services pre-installed on Nokia Series 60 devices

Espoo, Finland - Nokia, the global leader in mobility, and Yahoo!, the number one global internet brand, today announced an agreement that allows millions of Nokia smartphone users to stay informed, entertained and in touch through Yahoo!'s rapidly developing internet services. Yahoo! data communications services such as e-mail, Yahoo! entertainment services such as ring tones, wallpapers and downloadable games and Yahoo! Search for Mobile, will be the first set of services available through Nokia devices based on Series 60, the industry-leading smartphone platform.

"Access to information, entertainment and the ability to stay in touch when and where you want is at the heart of our vision of a mobile connected life," said Harry Santamäki, Vice President, Strategy and Business Development, Nokia Multimedia. "Our agreement with Yahoo! is a progressive step in facilitating the adoption of an online lifestyle: we are providing consumers with a familiar way of accessing the internet and Yahoo! email through their mobile devices, with the added convenience of content downloads on the go."

Juha Varelius, VP & MD of Yahoo! Mobile said: "With consumers' lives across the world becoming increasingly centered around mobile communications, this new international relationship between Yahoo! and Nokia is a great way for people to have the Yahoo! internet experience on their Nokia phone and benefit from a range of essential services on the go."

Nokia Press Release:

Slide and Shoot with the Nokia N70: the smallest 3G Series 60 smartphone with 2 megapixel camera

Nokia N70 is part of the Nokia Nseries high performance multimedia range

Amsterdam, Cancun, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur – Nokia today introduced the Nokia N70 multimedia, a beautifully designed, compact and easy-to-use 3G smartphone with versatile mobile photography, personal productivity and entertainment features. Incorporating a complete smartphone feature set, as well as a 2 megapixel camera, flash and front camera for video calling, the Nokia N70 comes fully equipped with stereo FM radio, a digital music player and new 3D games.

“The Nokia N70 perfectly illustrates our commitment to offer powerful, all-inclusive handsets that aid people in their daily lives. In addition to advanced smartphone and entertainment features, mobile photography is extremely easy and enjoyable with the elegant Nokia N70,” said Joe Coles, Director of imaging product marketing at Nokia. “The number one reason why people today purchase new handsets is the camera. Indeed, we foresee that by the end of 2005, over half a billion people worldwide will own a camera phone.”

Easy mobile photography
The slide and shoot design makes mobile photography fast and simple. The rear camera slide reveals and automatically activates the 2 megapixel camera, ready to instantly shoot photos or video. The intuitive slide is complemented with an integrated flash, 20x zoom capability and a range of capture scene settings for optimizing image quality in various environments, including Scenery, Portrait, Night, and Sports. Furthermore, the dedicated shutter key on the side of the phone enables users to capture images like they would with a regular camera, allowing for greater stability and ease of use.

The storage, management and organization of images and video clips is convenient and efficient with the Nokia N70. With the Nokia XpressTransfer storing solution, all new photos and video clips can be automatically copied to the PC. Photo albums created on the phone are also automatically saved in similar albums on the PC. Furthermore, the Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition software offers users an efficient way for organizing or editing photos
and video clips on the PC.

The new improved rotating Gallery provides for enhanced browsing of images and video clips. Images can, for example, be organized into slideshows, with the viewing experience further heightened with added background music. Images and video clips can also be instantly printed from the Gallery with the Nokia XpressPrint printing solution using a USB cable, wirelessly over Bluetooth connectivity, or using the Reduced Size Dual Voltage MultiMediaCard (RS-MMC).

Smart productivity
An excellent and powerful tool for personal and professional information management, the Nokia N70 offers a full set of smartphone features, including very easy-to-set up email functionality with extensive attachment support, Internet browser, video streaming and 3G-enabled features such as two-way video calling* and video sharing*.

Furthermore, additional applications can be installed from various sources**, while organizer information can easily be synchronized with compatible PCs.

Entertainment on the move
Equipped with a digital music player with stereo audio, FM radio and support for Visual Radio, the compact 126 gram Nokia N70 also doubles as a great pocketable music device. For an even more playful multimedia experience, theNokia N70 supports S60 and Java 2D and 3D games, some of which are pre-installed in the phone or on the standard in-box RS-MMC.

Measuring just 108.8 x 53 x 17.5 mm (95.9 cc), the Nokia N70 is the smallest ever 2 megapixel 3G smartphone based on the leading Series 60 Platform. The Nokia N70 is expected to be available in the third quarter of 2005. Additionally, a variant of the Nokia N70 for EDGE (Enhanced Data Rate for GSM Evolution) markets will be available at a later date.

one of the best pics i've taken with my trusty Nokia 7610!

Hotviewer and Email viewer by Reqwireless

want to check your email wirelessly when on the go using your mobile device? Then these applications are just for you! Reqwireless Hotviewer and Email viewer are the handiest bits of symbian software developed to date. They allow you to check your hotmail email/pop3/IMAP4 email without the hassle of using a browser and signing in again and again. You get to perform all the functions that one gets using a regular browser including viewing attachments and links that are sent in the email like a regular browser! the greatest thing about these Email clients is that they are Java midlets meaning they can be used on MOST of today’s cell phones! Being only 56kb in size, being developed on the java platform also means that there are fewer bugs and errors reported (I’ve been using these since quite some time now and am very pleased) Hotviewer is detailed yet easy to use and doesn’t eat your phones memory up unlike other browsers and email clients, just the thing for people who need to get in touch via email all the time! Simple and clear, the functions are easy to read and the app itself easy to operate. Receive, compose, edit account details, add contacts to your address book or if you need help, try the online user guide. This application can really get a newbie going. And its not just plain old text any more either, you get the choice to select if you want to view the content in HTML or old-fashioned plain text. That’s not all; the built-in browser also supports all major image formats for easy viewing of media related content and Email viewer also has a spam filter! Now how about that? A spam filter on a mobile device? No kidding! Don’t use hotmail? Not to worry as Email viewer supports all other email accounts and is just as easy to use with the least size and the same decent UI that Hotviewer boasts. These applications do have a steep price tag of $19.99 each but they sure pack a punch when it comes to reading and viewing email content. A must have for any professional or Novice who wants to keep on touch! And a piece of advice from the guru, don’t bother wasting your time looking for cracks as these applications require online registration by keys that are given to the purchaser by reqwireless themselves. I would recommend these over any other email client and use them myself with utter satisfaction!

Matrix Effect

Ever thought doing that with just a smartphone was possible? General Description:

The latest version of Flexicam is quick and easy to use with superior features like mirror images, more control on the contrast, brightness etc. I Find the mirror image options and image scope thing really sweet! Perhaps the best thing about this application is the freedom to choose the format you take your picture in, it allows *.jpg, *.bmp and *.png.

It also allows the user to choose the type of colors, image size (goodness me it also allows 1600x200 pics!) Theres the usual day and night mode, or how about 20x zoom? Sounds brilliant? Well it is! Theres even an auto normalize option that processes the image after being taken, this thing really packs a punch and makes flexicam different from others of its kind!

The features are all set on the numeric keypad shortcuts, I find the results extremely good and sharp but it does take a lot of time to process, the images that is. You can take mirror images or edit previously taken images with all sorts of frames and effects and the end result is what I might call stunning. A good and handy application for the true photographer! It is one of those kinds that really deserve being there in your phone all the time

you can purchase Flexicam here

Phone Secure Review

In a country like Pakistan where cell phone theft rate is at its peak, I find this application MORE Then just a precaution for my phone being stolen. It’s called ‘Phone secure’ and it’s by Wild palm. Definitely one of the must have applications for your symbian phone! As the name suggests, This application can not only guarantee the phone not being used by the criminal, it can even make you hope of you getting it back!

Phone secure is a small application size-wise (only 70kb) but feature-wise it is certainly one of the best examples of a smart phone powered by symbian. Phone secure basically lets you lock your phone remotely by sending a special text message to your phone, if the phone is turned and the lock enabled, it will by receiving that special text message automatically lock itself and become impenetrable for the thief! Impressive? Read on for more unbelievable features!

1) Lock Enabled: (ON/OFF) Choose if you want the lock activated or deactivated according to the situation, for example if you’re changing the SIM card yourself then u can deactivate the lock so that the phone doesn’t go haywire when you reboot it. I would personally want to keep it on all the time except for the SIM card change; otherwise you never know what’s coming! If you send the locking message to your phone and the lock is disabled, you will get a reply from your phone saying so! The best part is, you can lock your phone from anywhere in the world, you only need your number to receive the SMS! But sadly, that’s the bad part as well, a thief wouldn’t be dumb enough to use YOUR SIM in the first place, but if he wants to spend a little and make calls and you get to text your message, he’s busted!

2)Lock Message:The Lock message is the text the phone will display to the thief when he reboots the phone, the default message is ‘Phone is locked’ which is fine for me as the thief wouldn’t have the time to read a long one as the buzzer will be bugging him at the time, but if you don’t want that then just turn off the 3rd option

3)Audio Alarm:Turn the audio alarm on if you want the phone to be screaming when its not in the right hands or off if you plan a silent kill. It would have been good if you could choose your own audio clip but the default one is just as alarming as it should be!

4 & 5) SIM change alarm & Send SIM No. to:Well, what if we don’t get to text our own selves and the thief has changed the SIM card to his own one? No fear! Just activate this alarm and define a number to which you want sent, the number of the new SIM! Voila! Use this new number and send it a locking message, thus locking your phone again!

Additional Description: You can lock AND unlock the phone remotely by just sending a special message to the number that’s being used by the phone! And if you already have the SIM change alarm turned on, the phone will lock itself as soon as it is turned on with a different SIM! No, the thief obviously cannot use any other application as the message will not disappear and will continue until the password is put in or the phone is unlocked remotely! And no folks that’s not it you can even send a message to your phone to send back your IMEI code so that you can report it to the network operator and get your phone blocked! Worried about network traffic? Don’t be as the special text messages sent and received by the phone containing commands for phone secure are given special preference! How about informing the Police about the number that is using the SIM? They can easily locate the person by inquiring the respected Network operator and they can tell them the Address of the person who that number belongs to! Still wondering that the phone might be penetrable? What if the crook removes the MMC? Well don’t install it on the MMC, keep it always with the phone by installing it onto the phone memory! (obviously you need to have bluetooth turned on as well)

Here is what you have to do:

1) download this file
2) send it over to your phone
3) save it as a note
4) open this note and using the pencil key copy this text
5) go to Bluetooth and click on My bluetooth name
6) again using the pencil key, paste the copied text here

and thats it! you're all done, now when any bluetooth phone searches for you or tries to connect to you, that phone will automatically restart!

wicked right? try it for yourself and tell me what you think! :)

Ufone makes new postpaid packages and reduces current postpaid tariff!

After a bashing from the PTA consumer awareness notice sometime last week, (search around, i blogged that too) Ufone has decided to improve its image by reducing postpaid tariff and also offering more free minutes and free sms! check the new tariff out here.

Unfortunately, the rates for MMS and GPRS still remain the same which disappoint me but tariff going done is always beneficial for the consumers and thats us so overall i call this a good move by Ufone to enhance its current customer relationship and maybe sell a few more connections before Warid launches.. but still i can see doubts in the minds of people who would want to wait for Warid, check its rates out and then buy a mobile connection! Hopefully warid will be launching in the first two weeks of April and will end the suspense and people will finally get to decide what they want!

btw, i think ufone should also have reduced prepaid rates and i can still see a little potential for all cellular tarriffs to drop more, in both the prepaid and postpaid sector! but really disappointing to see ufone not offering 'free Mb's ' for GPRS or atleast reducing its rates for postpaid customers as the line-rent increases, that would have helped them gain customers as well! ohh well, i guess i know what they are doing!

speed up your series 60 device!

here's how you do it..

Sounds like bullshit? did to me too but i still tried it and well.. my phone was pretty fast before so maybe thats why i can't notce any change but the person who discovered this says it was told to him from the Nokia service department in the philipines! try it for yourself and comment here if it works!

papyrus-_ a brief intro!

its creators claim its a replacement for the old fashioned default calender application! do i think so? not really.. well to begin with, it is fast and really simple but what i don't like in this calender application for series 60 is the interface.. its just too plain and simple! its not attractive AT ALL! the blue background makes me feel.. well.. 'blue'!

but that was just the bad bit.. me being a non-business user and not really using the calender application to the full would never know but what i do know is that this thing is a bit different. here are the pros.. its fast, user friendly, compatible with all series 60 devices and the keys are significantly poised for easy usage.. the month and week view are cool and don't make u feel dizzy and let you see all the days activites without much hassle..

not a very detailed intro? well its not a really big application either! simple and straight stuff for anyone who was tired of the same old crappy default application! here is the link to the offical page of the application

Telenor the one of the new comers is amazingly even cheaper then paktel GSM which is good but then telenor doesn't have the coverage and paktel doesnt have GPRS..

but i bet Ufone surprised all of its unaware consumers including me by having so many hidden costs which makes it very expensive! within network calls seem to be OKAY but cross-network voice communication is going to rip you off!! really disappointed (although i have all the cellular company connections i still use ufone as my primary 1. Its surprising that PTA has revealed such information about Ufone which is a main subsidary of PTCL, anyway i can bet Ufone is now going to further reduce their tariff as to calm the customers down. Further more, its going to be privatised soon so hopefully the service (which isn't really what you call bad) will get better!

Mobilink as usual isn't cheapest in ANY category but still is the market leader!

There are 15 categories for calls and Insta leads by being the cheapest in 6 of them, Telenor is runner up with 4, Paktel with 3, Ufone with 2 and mobilink not being cheap at all!

you can find the actual table and tarifs here

I soon expect to see a postpaid comparison chart but from what i Know, postpaid Paktel GSM is the cheapest! Hopefully all will be clear soon and once again Thank you PTA!

yet another disappointing grand prix!

what a season its turning out to be for ferrari and michael schumacher! (its obvious) so.. what about it? well its certainly not cheap and althought it does have GPRS it still isnt sufficient, with only 1 postpaid package plan, not so cheap calling rates and the same GPRS rates as the existing operator Ufone.. its not that much of a buzz.. still many people plan to swtich to it.. especially those who have been destined by nature to use mobilink.. Pakistans most pathetic cellular company! easy charge is a good thing and will most probbaly result in massive selling of telenor connections but whatever it offers.. i guess its enough to pave its way through.. but i wont doubt ufone or mobilink giving it tough competition in the upcoming weeks and with warid yet to arrive.. i bet the rates will still go down! i just hope that Ufone starts offering GPRS at a lower rate and also EDGE which was supposed to be offered by telenor.. also unlimited data plans would mean heaven for heavy users like me! btw,.. i still will get telenor! why? because u never know which connection you might need! so keep all of them in a magic sim and switch to the one that does everything for u! ;)

use broadband wifi at 35000 feet!

Connexion by Boeing offers wireless internet while you travel! just turn on your wifi enabled device and use their service on selected routes for accessing emails, company intranet or just browsing the internet! wow! awesome! in my case i would want it to be a Nokia 9500.. enter the plane and enter the flight mode and be connected wherever u go! now this is something i'd been looking to! internet in the air! just brilliant! the prices are a bit steep but i still think people will be willing to play. this should soon be common in all the airlines.. the airports already are emerging as hotspots.. heres the link to the website.. just awesome!

the jabra bt800!

what an awesome bluetooth headset! order it now.. the link is to your right!!

Telenor has planned to invest $400 million this year and Warid $392 million but for me, the operator thats going to win is the one which provides more reliable data services such as EDGE and not just launches these services but works on its uses too and educates people about it! its not about coverage anymore.. mobilink has enough of that! we need cheaper and more usable GPRS and EDGE to really enjoy mobility!

on 2nd April 2005 at sheraton towers karachi, there will be a telecommunication conference regarding the current scenario and both the companies CEO's will be there to discuss their operations and services.. hopefull telenor would have launched by then! btw, their advertising campaign has really disappointed me! they missed out on the continous series of ads in the print media and they are totally mixed up about the destinations! lets hope they 'get well soon'

wow! some mp3 plaYer!

Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE - news) (news - web sites)'s new Walkman portable music player NW-E507 is displayed in Tokyo March 9, 2005. Elsewhere it is being rumoured that Warid telecom has bought Paktel GSM and will use its franchises (well duh..) but surprisingly paktels prefix 0304.. now thats something shocking.. but since i already have a paktel sim.. hehe i guess that means i wont have to buy warid! already got it :)

news about a new virus is spreading quick on top cellphone sites.. this new trojan infects smartphones via mms attachments, the user downloads the file and installs it which results in some of the menu apps not working.. just like skulls.. but this is spreading more becasue unlike via bluetooth.. the user does not suspect mms and accepts it.. i know nothing like that is going to happen for sure here in pakistan.. since the number of people who use mms is only a handful..

im really craving a laptop these days.. i feel like i really need wifi and a laptop with me wherever i go! just cant stand going to the desktop again and again!! oooh im hating it!

a friend ordered an ipod mini photo 60Gb from amazon,.. liked the price and trust amazon as it delivers to my country.. u can order it for yourself from here.. the link is in the sidebar.. really wanted an mp3 player and now he can share pics in it as well..

virgin radio has linked to my blog because i reviewd their application.. they say they really liked it and i hope most of the readers did too! will keep updating with reviews and news!

Virgin 3G radio application Review

I guess its been a week since this marvellous application has been launched and already it has more than a thousand downloads!

For those of you who do not know about it already, the Virgin 3G radio application has been developed by sydus mobile for Virgins 3G network in the UK. This application lets cellphone users from around the world stream Live radio to their phones via GPRS/EDGE/WCDMA. Currently their are 3 virgin stations available, namely they are: Virgin radio, Virgin Radio Classic Rock and Virgin Radio Groove.

I'm using GPRS which is relatively slow and yes it does hang somewhat when buffering and playing. When you start the application, it asks you to select an accesspoint. When the accesspoint has been selected it tries to connect. When connected successfully it displays the names of the 3 radio channels for you to select, click on one and it starts to buffer and after a little pause begins to play. I was impressed at the quality of the sound that i was getting. You can control the volume by moving the Navi-key left or right to decrease and increase the volume respectively. Even with GPRS, although not perfect the streaming was very good and i was impressed with the speed! I wish i had stereo earphones to plug into my 7610 and listen! but the loudspeaker works good too.

The application is easy to use and i particularly liked the simple yet attractive Menus and images. Previously i had never streamed data onto my phone using GPRS (i had tried avec radio but it had never worked for me.) So this was the first time i've ever done it and boy am i happy! I only wish i had an unlimited data plan now.

Perhaps the best thing about the application is that it is completely free and not just people on Virgins network are able to use it but people like me in Pakistan are able to listen to UK radio LIVE on my phone, i was able to impress and amaze alot of my non-geek friends who reacted, "No way! it must be recorded" but its not! its live as live can be! I have always found radio to be better then stored MP3's or AAC music files. There's just something about being able to listen live, not just the same old songs again and again! you get choice and it gets you going!

I have not once failed to connect to any radio station during my one week of using it and my phone has given no errors. I would recommend this application to anyone who wants to know what their series60 or UIQ phone can do and what mobile internet is really about!

If you are lucky enough to have EDGE or unlimited GPRS plans then im sure you will not get enough of this! The application can be downloaded from www.allaboutsymbian.com or www.sydusmobile.com One of the best ever series 60 applications i would say and also ranks as one of the best freewares!

It has developed vastly in terms of technology, finance and other major sectors.. but im not here to talk about that. I’m here to tell you about the major developments that have taken place in the telecommunication sector and what ‘I’ as a cellphone freak would like to happen next.

Pakistan has currently 7 cellular operators providing mobile communication at an affordable rate compared to other developed countries.. two of these seven operators operate on AMPS/TDMA so lets leave them aside and we are now left with 5, namely Telenor; the 12th largest cellular service provider in the world ranked by the GSM association. Warid telecom which is backed by the Dubai-based Sheikh Al Nahyan Mubarak Al Nahyan. This group also owns a well renowned bank in Pakistan. Mobilink which was the first ever GSM provider. It started its operations 10 years ago and still is stuck on GSM and sadly is the largest network with the largest coverage but what matters to people like me is not coverage of villages and sub-districts but upgrading technology rather then staying on GSM. Mobilink has invested up till now $750MN on its network expansion and customer subscription base. It has 63% of the market share. (the total cellular subscriber base is around 6.5 million users) Here I would like to point out that Telenor and Warid at the time I am writing this article have still not commenced their operations here. They claim they will start in march 2005. Anyway back to the networks. Ufone which is my favorite because it offers GPRS. I still own a mobilink but don’t use it at all. Ufone has 30% of the market share and has cheap outgoing rates thus it’s my preference. lastly Paktel which also operates a TDMA network by the same name. I also own a paktel chip because its good for calling after mid-night.Mobilinks service is intolerable mainly because its expensive and does not offer any kind of data services on its pathetic GSM network and has a huge customer base. Telenor and Warid have stated that they will be offering EDGE or EGPRS as soon as they arrive which interests me. At least something better then slow-speed GPRS would be an achievement and streaming content will be offered and can be used like the recently developed Virgin Radio for series 60 devices. I personally own a Nokia 7610 and am quite happy with it because I can use it for all my needs and there Is no use upgrading to another device until the networks here upgrade. What’s the use if I have a Nokia 6630 3G phone but don’t even have 2.75G or EDGE in my country? I believe in using a symbian device to its total and extreme potential and is why I chose ufone as my operator and a 7610 because it does not offer anything more then GPRS in terms of data services. It can take mega pixel pictures and I can use agile messenger on it. GPRS by ufone is like $0.25/mb which still seems expensive to me and I dream about ufone one day offering unlimited data plans like In the US so I can stay online from agile wherever I go and can use wireless IRC all day because the 7610 does not have Wi-Fi. Let’s move on though as I think most of the people already know the features of the 7610 and don’t need a recap.

After the Nokia 3310 and the Nokia 2100, I think the most common nokia cell phone in Pakistan would be the Nokia 6600. it was launched more than 18 months back and is still sold brand new and second-hand devices still get very good prices. A symbian device so common? According to nokia, Pakistan will be its second-largest market in the world by 2007 and it will be starting its manufacturing plant here and it will be operational by the end of this year. That’s good news for us as some people hope the prices will drop but I doubt it. I think nokia has its own standards. It can’t let cell phones be so cheap but still the cheapest sim-free rates are here in Pakistan! You don’t get upgrades or contracts here, a connection costs $3 and you can get a cheap cell phone by brands like Db-tel or Viva or Bird and you’re on your way! I on the other hand cannot settle for anything less then a symbian device. Or a wannabe phone like the Nokia 6230. It too has a good amount of sale as people like it due to its small size and good looks. Moving on, by the way this is my first ever article/analysis on telecommunication. The 6600 the most common symbian phone here but 99% people who use it and I mean it, don’t know what system it operates on, what tri-band is and they don’t know how to use it either. All the things will be left on mainly because they press the ‘red key’ which they think closes the application like in the series 40 phones. But im not making fun, these people have not been provided with the appropriate information about the things they own! Just imagine if they did know all the stuff. They would use it in their lives and would make good use of it. But sadly, that is not the case. Only a few people and I do mean a very few ever spend time to know more about their device or to know its full capabilities. A friend of mine who is a typical example of what I was mentioning earlier bought a Nokia 9500 and almost calls me everyday to ask stupid questions like what is ‘WLAN’ I so wish people knew what they are in for when they choose to buy smartphones. Many small-scale cell phone manufactures have tried to make their way and have their piece of pie in the market of cell phones but what everyone here believes is ‘Nokia is Nokia’ and they don’t trust other brands. I once offered my driver a cell phone a Nokia 2300 to be precise and can you imagine what he said? ‘ I want a Nokia 3310!’ just because everyone had told him that 3310 was the best. He didn’t care about radio or polyphonic ring tones or the cool display and lightweight features. He asked for the cheaper in price and bulky in size 3310! Even a hawker here has a cell phone because a) the connection is cheap and b) phones are cheap too.

Pakistan has a HUGE potential for cell phones and networks and mobile technology and I do hope that once telenor and warid arrive, other networks fill be forced to upgrade to EDGE or maybe (by the time im married) 3G which is my dream! Would love to have NTTdocomo as my network operator one day! a trip to a restaurant can show how many people leave their Bluetooth on and accept anything that is being sent to them from anyone! They consider them the hip crowd of the city and when asked what symbian is left munching their tongues. People need to be educated and I as a single person am trying my level best to bring people to reality and educate them about everything. Not just cracked applications and games!Apart from cellular operators Pakistan has also just recently awarded 14 WLL (wireless local loop) licenses but until now only one two such providers have emerged like GOCDMA and PTCL(Pakistan telecommunication limited) V-tel. More information about the licensees can be found on this website

Incase you are getting bored I have decided to end this article for now and hope to see good comments about it by the readers. This was my first ever one so please be easy on the critique. Telenor is set to launch the coming week hopefully! heard its going to be VERY Cheap and will have EDGE but now i dont have the funds to buy an edge enabled phone.. but i do hope their GPRS charges are less so i can listen to virgin classic rock!

recently read an interesting article on AAS about symbian 9 and UIQ 3.0 and cant seem to make up my mind which 1 to go for! loads of articles on aas about them.. i think i've started to like the 7710..it just looks so good! havent seen it in reality as yet but.. i guess it would be nice to hold.. slim and all.. had my tests going this week so been busy with that.. i've uploaded a few pics taken with my 7610 to show just how good phone photography can get.. will put some up later on! ciao for now and be sure to check back soon!

not being given much respect..

i joined a local forum few days back and tried to share the knowledge i have about symbian but boy oh boy are people arrogant or what! i was being envied like anything and since i was only a toddler on the forum.. all the previous members joined up against me.. lol i dont believe it man.. it was pathetic.. i seriously was disappointed on how people would behave... and because it was a local one.. there was not a SINGLE female member! hehe.. not that it matters to me but shows that females are not welcome or are not interested in forums..
anyway in the rest of the world, Rafe the admin at AAS(for those of you who dont know, Allaboutsymbian) better get used to it becasue im gonna use it ALOT. hes been continuing his posts and previews about the latest symbian devices that have been launched at the 3GSM world congress and this week he took a look at the new motorola a1010, a very nice phone indeed IMO. one thing i disliked was that motorola have planned to launch it in 2006 and have featured it NOW.. like 10 months before so that will keep people waiting.. a 3G phone with a multimegapixel camera is sure to sell and with a nice stylus and wifi added, the second phone only to have wifi.. its going to be good.. its UIQ, i think u might have guessed by me mentioning the stylus.. anyway.. i like it and think it looks hot..

what else? hmMm.. desperately been wanting to blog lately but i think blogger was down as the page wouldnt load.. i hope i've gathered a few frequent readers.. i know i got my blog added to Ewan's feed which is an achievement for me! :)

a friend has recently bought a pda2k.. says he loves it.. why wouldnt he? his sister gifted it to him in exchange for his 6600!!! i havent seen it yet but i know how cool a device it would be.. but personally i dont like pdas.. i think they r too bulky and symbian is far better then any pda.. those r jus my 50 cents.. anyway people.. will keep u upto date.. check back soon.. ciao for now

new symbian devices

okay whoever doesnt know what symbian is.. please GET A LIFE! or goto www.allaboutsymbian.com for more details, infact everything u will EVER need to know about smartphones, first of all anyone who wants to buy a new phone or is looking for a replacement for their old ones, i would recommend u a smartphone with symbian OS. to see the complete list of symbian devices, www.symbian.com/phones/index.html
recently at cannes in france a global mobile communication expo took place known as the 3GSM world congress and alot of new phones were shown that would be available to us, the consumer in some time.. namely they were the panasonic X800 which is a good upgrade to their predecessor the X700, the sendo X2 which is also a good music smartphone and the Nokia 6680 and 6681 and 6682, the later are which GSM and the 6680 is 3G (3rd generation smartphone) we currently in pakistan have 3 GSM operators with 2 newcomers yet to arrive (telenor and warid telecom) none of which will have a 3G network so the Nokia 6680's capabilities will be of no use sadly although if u want to use it for EDGE (enhanced data rates for global evolution) it will be good. Ufone is the 2.5G network in pakistan today and mobilink and paktel are 2G which means we are a GENERATION behind in terms of technology as only a single operator offers GPRS which has the maximum speed of 40.2kbps.. EDGE can go upto 104kbps and HSDPA(high speed data packet access) or 3G or 3.5G and WCDMA networks offer capacity upto 10 or 14MBPS which can enable live video streaming, movie streaming, talking and browsing all at the same time but for us pakistanis, i would not recommend buying a 3G phone until we get a 3G operator. i would recommend an EDGE enabled handset as it is heard that telenor and warid both will pack a punch to Ufones SLOW GPRS. that time will tell but i will be prepared.. details of the new phones are not mentioned here as it will be recreating the information that is already there on the internet, check the manufactures website for more details..

my experience with a smartphone

so lets continue, this phone (the 7610) was my firstever smartphone and previously i really didnt know what it was all about until i found a few forums and really got to know what was possible with GPRS and other technologies.. its just too good but now i crave EDGE and 3G networks and there are none in my country so alas.. i can only dream of one day having a video conversation with friends! my birthday today anyway! :) the stuff that i have had since i bought my phone (the softwares that is) are agile messenger which is a great MSN and other Instant messaging services client, smartmovie which lets me play .avi files on my phone with great quality and resolution, loads of games.. i play them and when im done i get new ones.. dont keep one in particular.. at the moment i only have stunt car extreme which is probably THE Best game i have ever played on my phone yet.. i also have Fexplorer which is the MUST have utility for any symbian based device.. especially series 60! scrypto which is an encrypting tool and lets me hide my personal files and folder, smsxtender which is the best example of what you CAN do with your phone.. www.simeda.com/smsxtender.html check the link and i know you'l love it! Zipman as the name suggests is able to open compressed files and create archives, hotmail viewer which lets me check my mail anywhere i want with the least data possible so less costs even though GPRS in my country is only like $0.25 per MB which is pretty cheap but im still not happy as the speed and bandwith both suck :( so im desperately waiting for Telenor and Warid to show up so that we get atleast another operator that provides GPRS.. anyway we'll talk about that later. so what else do i have.. hmm.. fileman which is great for copy pasting LARGE size files.. photorite: a great photo editor and noise reducer on the phone!

me

well it certainly was worth the wait becasue when i opened the box and held it in my hand for the very first time, i knew i had something special! been using it for a while now and still am not tired of it, every pic im posting here is taken with my handy phone and its always been there for me, for instant messaging, easy calling and everything! upload it almost everyday with cool new software thats coming out! and all the credit goes to the allaboutsymbian forum, taught me everything! anyway im really happy with the phone and will only change it once symbian 9 and series 60 feature pack 3 comes out.. also bluetooth 2.0 and wifi!

My fiRst post!

Hey well im totally new to blogging and as the title says, my first post ever on a blog!
